Over the past century, women have gained substantial power in the political world. This is true for most countries, Canada certainly. However, I would have to say that women in politics adds a dimension of danger to the political structure of our country. This may not be a popular view, but I think something like politics is more of a man's domain than a women's- and I think that giving women the right to hold a position of power in politics could have serious negative affects. Im terrified imagining a country run by a women. Women just don't possess the same power or influence as men do. This is how its always been, and Im not sure why our country has been so set on changing the way things have always worked. Not to mention, having women in politics has a proven history of distracting male politicians (think Bill Clinton) and I don't think we need any more political scandals ensuing.

Question: Should women have the right to vote?

Mean Girls

Jun. 8th, 2014 04:34 pm
There are some girls out there that are so mean. Its terrible to think of them harming another girl in school- especially over something petty like wearing the same shirt as them or not wearing pink on Wednesdays. But in all seriousness, I think that changing the judicial system for young offenders was the right thing to do. I haven't heard of any young girls being severely bullied in awhile, although Im sure it still happens. These days social media makes bullying all too easy. In the good old days, you could leave the bullys at school, now you have to face them all over social media at night. Victims of bullying face all kinds of social problems that will follow them around for decades to follow. So thoughtless.

Question: What creates a bully?
"Post Princess Models of Gender" was a piece that deeply disturbed me. As a young women in the 21st century, I know that I am supposed to want women's rights and border on feminist values. However, I don't see the need to change up traditional gender roles that have been in existence for thousands of years. What's wrong with a male dominated society? I don't see why any women would want a soft man. An example of traditional gender roles being mutilated in film could be Zoolander. Derek Zoolander took on the feminine profession of modelling, while the female journalist lead did all of the research and work in the film to save Zoolander. How exhausting for her! I must say that I think society would experience far less turmoil if we all just agreed to live in a man's world.
Mr. Stephen Lewis has a love affair with Africa. His passion for everything Africa is transpired through ETHOS, PATHOS, and LOGOS! My favorite of the three latin words is LOGOS. I don`t trust emotions and I don`t have time for ethics, but one thing is for sure, numbers are numbers and logic is logical because it makes sense! So, I found the logos in this essay to be very moving. However, prior to reading this essay I already knew that Africa was a poor place with lots of sad hungry people so I can`t really say that I was persuaded so to speak. I still want to go to Africa one day and swim with the hippos and play with the elephants and also visit the little children who need North Americans to adopt them.

Discussion Question: What can we do to help the orphans in Africa
Food is the bread of life."Food Security" by Charles J. Godfray, point out quite bluntly that there are 9 billion people on this planet and they all need to eat. That's not taking into account the billions of other living life forms on this planet. Whatever can be done? Realistically, this mind blowing question offers few options for solving the food scarcity problem.

With little food available for the ever increasing population, I would have to say that the answer is quite clear. People who can afford to eat well should be able to eat well. People who cant afford it shouldn't be picky. After all, they are lucky to get food at all. There are lots of foods that are cheap and also healthy (lettuce, plants, bread). Having a choice in foods is nice, but at the end of the day its a luxury that most citizens don't have. Poor people need to be resourceful with their resources and band together to ensure that everyone is able to eat. First world people have their own share of problems. Poor people have very primitive problems. If they can focus their own efforts on finding something edible to keep them going then there will be enough food to go around.
"Tarmageddon" by Andrew Nikiforuk is an essay focused on bringing to attention the negative effects that the Canadian tar sands are having on our country, the environment, and our international relations. Nikiforuk uses vivid imagery to get across his point, such as describing the 1.4 billion hectares of industrialized forest by the tar sands as the size of 40 Denvers or 17 Berlins. In analysis, readers are left feeling both genuinely disgusted with the Canadian government and the tar sands. Although this essay is very effective in portraying the negative outcomes of the tar sands, it does not leave readers with any direction to how they, as civilians, can help end this operation.

Discussion Question: What can Canadians do to help minimize the negative effects of the tar sands? Is there a reasonable alternative to using the tar sands?
